Summer Health Careers Institute (SHCI)
SRJC Health Sciences department and the HSI STEM Avanzando Initiative presents the 2025 Summer Health Careers Institute (SHCI). SHCI (HLC120) is a 3-unit credit-based course for high school students interested in exploring careers in healthcare. SHCI is intended for rising high school seniors and college freshman. The program will take place June 16 – July 10, 2025.
In this course, students will be introduced to opportunities in healthcare careers through lectures, laboratories, and experiences in clinical settings. Students will complete various certification trainings and learn about healthcare job trends, education, and licensure requirements.
The student application will be available from April 5 – May 5, 2025. Students apply directly to the program; there is no counselor recommendation route. Enrollment for this course is on a first-come first-serve basis. Students must submit all required documents to receive an add code for this course.
Avanzando will host an information session about the steps to join SHCI on Thursday, March 6th at 6:00 pm on Zoom. Students and families are highly encouraged to attend to learn about the application process.
HEALTH/IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Initial health and safety requirements must be submitted before the start of the program. Do not submit these documents with your online application.
A. Tuberculin Skin Test- Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) A two-step PPD test upon acceptance. With a two-step skin test, the second PPD test is performed one week after the first test.
B. Immunizations
1. Hepatitis B Three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine and a documented seropositivity following the third dose or completion of the Hepislav two-dose vaccine with a documented seropositive lab result following the second dose. The first two doses must be completed prior to acceptance into the SHCI program.
2. Tetanus/Diphtheria Booster vaccination within previous ten (10) years
3. Measles Mumps Rubella Two doses of vaccine since 1980 or a positive titer
4. Varicella Vaccination or a positive titer. History of disease is not accepted.
5. Influenza Influenza immunization is recommended
6. COVID-19 and Variants COVID-19 two-dose vaccine and 1 booster.
